Design Overview

Requirements Coverage

System Architecture

Power Topology: USB-C input goes into TI BQ25896 charger management IC which handles dynamic power path, charges the internal Li-Po cell (VBAT), and regulates down to SYS_5V and SYS_3V3 rails supplying the CM4 compute module, display, audio, and peripheral controllers.

Design Schemes

SBC Carrier Board with Compute Module ★

Utilizes a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4) mounted to a custom carrier board integrating power delivery, MIPI DSI touch display, and a custom thumb keyboard matrix.

Trade-offs: Highest software maturity and ease of development for Linux desktop apps, but tight pocket-sizing is constrained by standard module footprints.

Key IC selection

main compute module / applications processor

• Need: Provide quad-core ARM Linux computing, high-speed interfaces (MIPI DSI, PCIe/USB), and rich software ecosystem for writing and media.
• Class: System-on-Module (SoM) with high-density board-to-board connectors
• Shortlist: Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, Allwinner/Rockchip based SoMs
• Pick: Select based on ecosystem maturity, Linux mainline support, pin-compatibility, and availability of Lite variant (no onboard eMMC).

battery charger and power management IC

• Need: Manage USB-C charging up to 9V fast charge, handle dynamic power path management (DPPM), and supply core system rails.
• Class: I2C-controlled switch-mode battery charger combined with companion PMIC
• Shortlist: TI BQ25896 + TPS65217C, Richtek RT9467 + PMIC
• Pick: Select based on input voltage range, quiescent current, thermal dissipation under 9V fast charge, and proven PMIC handshake with application processor.

keyboard controller

• Need: Scan custom mechanical switch matrix, debounce keys locally, and communicate standard USB HID to the compute module.
• Class: USB-capable 8-bit/32-bit microcontroller with internal pull-ups and sufficient GPIO
• Shortlist: Microchip ATmega32U4, Raspberry Pi RP2040
• Pick: Select based on native USB stack availability, package size, and active community firmware support (e.g., QMK/VIA).

high-resolution audio DAC

• Need: Convert I2S digital audio from CM4 into low-noise analog audio out for headphone jack and class-D amplifier.
• Class: Advanced Segment Audio DAC with ground-centered outputs or direct filter-free output
• Shortlist: TI PCM5102A, ESS ES9018K2M
• Pick: Select based on integrated charge pump (eliminating DC blocking caps), SNR performance, and I2S interface simplicity.

Risk register

Bring-up and Validation Plan

1. Power-off inspection and rail resistance checks
2. Current-limited first power-up; verify every rail before enabling loads
3. Validate interfaces and timing one subsystem at a time
4. Run thermal, fault-injection, EMC pre-scan, and endurance tests for the target environment

Key Components

5/6 modules matched to real parts. See the BOM tab for the full component table.

TI BQ25896 + TPS65217C (TPS65217CRSIR)

Candidate 1 (TPS65217CRSIR) is the correct production integrated circuit matching the primary MPN with a valid reel pack

Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4 Lite) (CM4)

The candidate has the exact MPN 'CM4' matching the primary MPN, but the manufacturer 'TDK' does not match 'Raspberry Pi'

4.0-inch MIPI DSI IPS Touch Panel (e.g., 720x720 or similar) (x720)

Web recommendation: x720 (not in ES)

Build Summary

• Difficulty: Advanced
• Estimated time: 6-8 hours
• Tools required: Anti-static mat, Component sorting trays, Digital caliper, Hot air station, Soldering iron, Solder paste and flux

See the Build tab for the full step-by-step assembly guide.

Evidence and Limitations

• Confirm part parameters, certifications, and compatibility against current manufacturer documents.
• Treat industry compliance without test or certificate evidence as a compliance gap, not an approval.
• See Reference Images for visual artifacts and Build Guide for detailed assembly and bring-up steps.
