A compact desktop focus assistant featuring a display, microcontroller, WiFi connectivity, haptic motor, and touch switch powered via USB-C.

Executive Summary

This reference design defines the system architecture, critical component candidates, risk register, and validation path for Smart Productivity Timer. It is a system-level design deliverable; verify critical claims with manufacturer evidence and prototype testing before production release.

Design Overview

Requirements Coverage

System Architecture

Power Topology: USB-C 5V input is stepped down via an on-board LDO regulator to a stable 3.3V rail powering the ESP32-S3 MCU, SPI display, capacitive touch switch breakout, and I2C haptic driver.

Integrated ESP32-S3 Dev Board Architecture ★

Compact architecture using an ESP32-S3 module, SPI IPS display, I2C touch controller, and DRV2605L haptic driver for a 5x5cm desktop productivity timer.

Trade-offs: Optimized for rapid off-the-shelf prototyping within a compact 5x5cm volume using modular breakout components.

Key IC selection

main MCU and wireless transceiver

• Need: Dual-core processing for real-time timer handling and Wi-Fi stack execution, with integrated RF and ample GPIOs.
• Class: Wi-Fi + BLE 32-bit Microcontroller Module
• Shortlist: Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, Realtek RTL8720DN module
• Pick: Select based on module certification (FCC/CE), flash size variant (e.g., 16MB Flash / 8MB PSRAM), and stock availability in distribution.

haptic driver IC

• Need: Drive a Linear Resonant Actuator (LRA) with closed-loop auto-resonance tracking and rich waveform library support.
• Class: I2C-controlled LRA/ERM Haptic Driver
• Shortlist: Texas Instruments DRV2605L, Dialog / Renesas DA7280
• Pick: Select based on I2C address compatibility, built-in library for LRA effects, and compact QFN packaging footprint.

step-down voltage regulator

• Need: Regulate 5V USB input down to 3.3V with low quiescent current and sufficient output current for Wi-Fi burst transmissions.
• Class: Synchronous Step-Down (Buck) Regulator or Low-Dropout (LDO) Linear Regulator
• Shortlist: Richtek RT9013 (LDO if power budget is tiny), TPS62840 (High-efficiency buck)
• Pick: Select based on peak current demands during ESP32 Wi-Fi TX bursts, thermal dissipation in the 5x5cm cube, and BOM cost.

Bring-up and Validation Plan

1. Power-off inspection and rail resistance checks
2. Current-limited first power-up; verify every rail before enabling loads
3. Validate interfaces and timing one subsystem at a time
4. Run thermal, fault-injection, EMC pre-scan, and endurance tests for the target environment

Key Components

5/6 modules matched to real parts. See the BOM tab for the full component table.

USB Type-C Power Input & LDO (AP2112K-3.3TRG1)

The candidate matches the primary MPN AP2112K-3.3TRG1 and the manufacturer Diodes Incorporated, perfectly fitting the 3.

Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 (ESP32-S3-WROOM-1)

The candidate 'ESP32-S3-WROOM-1' is an exact match for the primary MPN provided, made by the preferred manufacturer Espr

Custom 5x5cm Cube 3D Printed Enclosure (x5cm)

Web recommendation: x5cm (not in ES)

Build Summary

• Difficulty: Intermediate
• Estimated time: 3-5 hours
• Tools required: Soldering iron, Solder wire, Flux, Digital Multimeter, Wire strippers, Flush cutters

See the Build tab for the full step-by-step assembly guide.

Evidence and Limitations

• Confirm part parameters, certifications, and compatibility against current manufacturer documents.
• Treat industry compliance without test or certificate evidence as a compliance gap, not an approval.
• See Reference Images for visual artifacts and Build Guide for detailed assembly and bring-up steps.
