1
Procurement & Preparation
- Sort and verify all components from the Bill of Materials including the LM7805 regulator, CD4060BE, CD4013BE, 32.768 kHz crystal, 74LS90 counters, CD4511 decoders, 74LS85 magnitude comparators, NE555 timer, 2N2222 transistor, piezo buzzer, and six 0.36-inch common-cathode 7-segment displays.
- Prepare power distribution rails on a large breadboard array (or multiple connected breadboards) to support the power regulation module and logic IC power buses.
2
Hardware Assembly & Wiring
- Assemble the LM7805 5V Linear Voltage Regulator circuit on the breadboard, adding input/output filter capacitors to ensure a stable 5V supply for the logic operation.
- Construct the timebase generator by wiring the CD4060BE oscillator with the 32.768 kHz crystal, and cascade it into the CD4013BE flip-flop to divide down the frequency to a precise 1 Hz clock pulse.
- Wire the six 74LS90 decade/binary counters in a cascaded chain to track Seconds, Minutes, and Hours in HH:MM:SS format, driven by the 1Hz_CLK signal.
- Connect the BCD outputs from the counter chain to the six CD4511 BCD-to-7-segment decoders, and link decoder outputs through current-limiting resistors to the six 0.36-inch common-cathode 7-segment displays.
- Integrate the 74LS85 magnitude comparators to compare the current TIME_BUS state against preset alarm DIP switches, producing an ALARM_TRIG signal upon a match.
- Build the audio alarm stage using the NE555 timer configured as an astable multivibrator, switched by the 2N2222 transistor, to drive the piezo buzzer when enabled by ALARM_TRIG.
3
Firmware Setup
- No programmable microcontroller is used in this hardware design; verify that manual pull-up/pull-down configuration resistors and time-setting pushbuttons are correctly wired to the counter reset/load pins for manual time setting.
4
Testing & Calibration
- Apply regulated 5V power to the entire breadboard circuit and inspect all IC supply pins for stable voltage levels without excessive thermal dissipation.
- Use an oscilloscope or frequency counter to verify the 1 Hz square wave output from the CD4060/CD4013 timebase generator stage.
- Monitor the HH:MM:SS display digits for 5 minutes to confirm proper incrementing of seconds, minutes roll-over at 60, and hours roll-over at 12/24.
- Set the alarm DIP switches to a test time matching the current clock state and verify that the NE555 timer and piezo buzzer produce an audible tone.

Design Schemes
Pure Hardware Logic Digital Alarm Clock ★
An all-hardware digital clock architecture utilizing a CD4060 oscillator, CD4013 divider, cascading decade counters, BCD decoders, and a hardware magnitude comparator for alarm triggering.
Trade-offs: High component count and wiring complexity on breadboards, but zero code required and offers deep educational value in synchronous digital logic.

Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | supply | high | Mixing 5V TTL logic (74LS90, 74LS85) with 5V CMOS logic (CD4060, CD4013, CD4511) can cause noise margins issues due to differing input/output threshold voltages. | Ensure clean 5V supply regulation, add robust decoupling capacitors (0.1uF ceramic per IC), and verify high-level/low-level output voltage compatibility across family boundaries. |
| r2 | emi | med | The 32.768 kHz crystal oscillator circuit is high-impedance and sensitive to parasitic capacitance and external electromagnetic interference, causing clock drift or stoppage. | Keep crystal trace lengths minimal, place load capacitors close to the CD4060 oscillator pins, and surround the crystal traces with a ground guard ring. |
| r3 | thermal | low | LM7805 linear regulator dropping 5V bench supply (assuming slightly higher unregulated input if changed later) may dissipate power, though minimal under 5V direct input. | Verify input voltage source; if powered strictly by 5V, note that linear regulators have a dropout voltage and a true 5V input may not properly regulate, requiring an input >7V or substitution with an LDO/direct rail. |
Bring-up and Validation Plan
- Power-off inspection and rail resistance checks
- Current-limited first power-up; verify every rail before enabling loads
- Validate interfaces and timing one subsystem at a time
- Run thermal, fault-injection, EMC pre-scan, and endurance tests for the target environment
