Solar-Powered Rough Terrain Exploration Robot

A solar-powered autonomous exploration robot for rough terrain featuring distributed microcontrollers, RTK GPS navigation, and intermittent solar charging.

Executive Summary

This reference design defines the system architecture, critical component candidates, risk register, and validation path for Solar-Powered Exploration Robot. It is a system-level design deliverable; verify critical claims with manufacturer evidence and prototype testing before production release.

Design Overview

Requirements Coverage

System Architecture

Power Topology: Solar panels collect energy under direct sunlight, regulated via an MPPT charge controller into a USB Power Bank buffer. The power bank outputs 5V to distribute regulated power rails to the Raspberry Pi 1, Seeeduino motor controller, and onboard DC-DC step-down converters for 3.3V logic modules (RPi Pico, Trinket M0, RTK GPS, LoRa, and ADXL345).

Distributed Heterogeneous Multi-Controller Solar Rover Architecture ★

Full integration of Raspberry Pi 1 for RTK logging, Raspberry Pi Pico for real-time sensor fusion, Seeeduino for motor control, and Trinket M0 for auxiliary telemetry.

Trade-offs: Maximizes hardware heterogeneity and project complexity using user-available boards, at the cost of increased inter-processor communication overhead.

Key IC selection

High-level companion computer

• Need: Run Linux OS, manage RTK data logging, coordinate USB/UART peripherals and remote interface.
• Class: Application Processor / Single Board Computer module
• Shortlist: Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, NXP i.MX6ULL SODIMM module
• Pick: Select based on Linux support, available peripheral interfaces (UART/USB), and long-term industrial availability.

Real-time co-processor for IMU fusion

• Need: Execute deterministic low-latency sensor sampling from ADXL345 via I2C/SPI.
• Class: 32-bit Dual-Core ARM Cortex-M0+ Microcontroller
• Shortlist: Raspberry Pi RP2040, STMicroelectronics STM32F401
• Pick: Choose low-cost, high-availability MCU with flexible PIO peripherals for custom sensor interfacing.

Long-range RF telemetry transceiver

• Need: Provide robust sub-GHz wireless communication link for telemetry and RTCM corrections over rough terrain.
• Class: Sub-GHz LoRa Transceiver IC
• Shortlist: Semtech SX1262, Silicon Labs Si4463
• Pick: Select Semtech SX1262 for high link budget, low receive current, and native LoRa modulation standard.

Bring-up and Validation Plan

1. Power-off inspection and rail resistance checks
2. Current-limited first power-up; verify every rail before enabling loads
3. Validate interfaces and timing one subsystem at a time
4. Run thermal, fault-injection, EMC pre-scan, and endurance tests for the target environment
