1
Procurement & Preparation
- Source all required electronic components including the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N16R2, TPS61093 step-up regulator, MCP73831 battery charger IC, CP2102 USB-to-UART bridge, and the 2.8-inch ILI9341 TFT LCD with XPT2046 touch controller.
- Inspect the custom PCB Gerber files and order the printed circuit boards from a qualified manufacturer, ensuring the board dimensions match the 3D-printed enclosure mounts.
- 3D print the desktop enclosure using heat-resistant filament (PETG or PLA) with a 0.2mm layer height and 20% infill.
2
Hardware Assembly & Wiring
- Apply solder paste to the custom PCB pads using a stainless steel stencil, then place the surface-mount components including the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, CP2102, MCP73831, and TPS61093 using tweezers.
- Hand-solder through-hole components, battery JST connectors, and header pins for the 2.8-inch TFT LCD module onto the PCB.
- Connect the Power Management circuit (MCP73831 + TPS61093) to the MCU Core, providing regulated 3V3 and GND lines across the system.
- Wire the SPI bus interface between the MCU Core and the Display/Touch module, connecting MOSI, MISO, SCK, DC/TFT_CS, T_CS, RST, and T_IRQ lines.
- Mount the assembled PCB and Li-Ion battery inside the 3D-printed enclosure, securing the display to the front bezel.
3
Firmware Setup
- Install PlatformIO or Arduino IDE and configure the ESP32 board support package along with required libraries (TFT_eSPI, ArduinoJson, XPT2046_Touchscreen).
- Configure the USB-to-UART bridge (CP2102) connection by plugging a USB-C cable from the computer to the device's programming port.
- Write and configure the firmware codebase to handle Wi-Fi credentials, TLS handshakes, Spotify Web API polling, JSON parsing of track data, and UI rendering on the ILI9341 display.
- Compile and flash the firmware binary to the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 via the CP2102 serial interface.
4
Testing & Calibration
- Power on the device via the battery or USB power and verify that the TPS61093 regulator outputs a stable 3.3V across the power distribution rails.
- Monitor the serial output console to confirm successful Wi-Fi connection establishment and TLS handshake with the Spotify API endpoints.
- Calibrate the XPT2046 touch controller coordinates to accurately map touch inputs for interactive playback controls (play, pause, skip).
- Perform a final end-to-end integration test by playing music on Spotify, verifying that album art, track title, artist name, and playback status update correctly on the display.

Design Schemes
Balanced Spotify Track Displayer ★
Default mix of catalog ICs, ESP32-S3 wireless MCU, and ILI9341 display module.
Trade-offs: Good availability; balanced cost, performance, and software ecosystem support.
Cost-first Spotify Track Displayer
Fewer discrete chips, integrated charger/regulator, and ESP32-WROOM-32 to optimize BOM cost.
Trade-offs: Lower BOM cost; tighter thermal margins and requires more firmware optimization.
Key IC selection
main MCU and Wi-Fi processor
- Need: Execute TLS stacks, parse Spotify JSON payloads, drive a 2.8-inch ILI9341 display via SPI, and maintain stable Wi-Fi connectivity on battery power.
- Class: Wi-Fi enabled 32-bit dual-core microcontroller with integrated PSRAM
- Shortlist: Espressif ESP32-S3 Series (ESP32-S3-WROOM-1), Realtek RTL8720DN based modules
- Pick: Select based on module availability, integrated flash/PSRAM size (recommend 16MB Flash / 8MB PSRAM for album art caching), and mature Arduino/ESP-IDF graphics library support.
Boost DC-DC regulator
- Need: Step up a fluctuating single-cell Li-Ion battery voltage (3.0V to 4.2V) to a stable 3.3V rail capable of supporting peak Wi-Fi transmission currents.
- Class: Synchronous boost DC-DC converter
- Shortlist: Texas Instruments TPS61093, Analog Devices LTC3129
- Pick: Select based on quiescent current, minimum start-up voltage, and output current capability during ESP32-S3 RF bursts.
Display controller and touch interface
- Need: Drive 320x240 resolution TFT panel with acceptable refresh rates over SPI and digitize resistive touch coordinates.
- Class: TFT LCD driver with SPI interface + Resistive touch controller
- Shortlist: Ilitek ILI9341 + XPT2046 combo module, Sitronix ST7789 + FT6236 capacitive combo
- Pick: Select ILI9341+XPT2046 as specified in the architecture to match existing driver libraries and mechanical display assembly.
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | power | high | ESP32-S3 Wi-Fi peak current spikes (up to 400mA+) can cause voltage sags on the TPS61093 output, leading to unexpected brownouts or Wi-Fi drops when the battery is partially discharged. | Ensure adequate bulk decoupling capacitance (e.g., low-ESR ceramic capacitors combined with a tantalum/polymer cap) directly at the ESP32-S3 3.3V power pin and optimize PCB trace width for the power rails. |
| r2 | firmware | med | Decoding high-resolution JPEG/PNG album art from Spotify API responses on the ESP32-S3 can consume significant heap memory, causing fragmentation or out-of-memory crashes. | Utilize external SPI PSRAM for image frame buffers and implement chunked or streaming image decoding libraries optimized for embedded microcontrollers. |
| r3 | thermal | low | Custom 3D-printed enclosure may trap heat from the linear charging portion of MCP73831 and the continuous Wi-Fi connection, warming the internal battery. | Add adequate ventilation slots in the 3D-printed enclosure and program the MCP73831 charge current resistor for a conservative charging rate suitable for the battery capacity. |
