1
Procurement & Preparation
- Source all electronic components including the IP5306 power management chip, Raspberry Pi CM4 or Zero 2 W, Logitech C270 webcam core, ST7789 2.0-inch IPS TFT display, MicroSD card slot holder, and 3x4x2mm tactile push buttons.
- Harvest the optical assembly and USB webcam core from the Logitech C270 housing by unscrewing the outer shell and carefully disconnecting the internal PCB sensor module.
- Prepare the microSD card by flashing a minimal Raspberry Pi OS Lite image configured with SSH enabled and pre-loaded V4L2 and SPI display overlay configurations.
2
Hardware Assembly & Wiring
- Mount the IP5306 power management module and the Raspberry Pi host processor onto the main carrier board, soldering the 5V, 3V3, and GND power rails between them.
- Wire the Logitech C270 USB webcam core to the host processor by connecting the USB_D+, USB_D-, VBUS, and GND lines to the corresponding USB port or test pads.
- Connect the ST7789 2.0-inch IPS TFT display to the host processor via the SPI interface, wiring MOSI, SCLK, CS, DC, RST, and BL lines, along with 3.3V and GND power.
- Solder the MicroSD card slot holder to the host processor SDIO bus data lines (DAT0-3), CMD, CLK, power, and ground pads.
- Install the Shutter and Mode tactile push buttons, wiring one side of each switch to the designated GPIO pins (BTN_SHUTTER, BTN_MODE) and the other side to GND with internal pull-ups enabled.
3
Firmware Setup
- Boot the embedded Linux system and configure the SPI display driver in the system configuration file to properly initialize the ST7789 TFT screen.
- Install V4L2 (Video4Linux2) utilities and Python libraries to interface with the Logitech C270 camera core for capturing frame buffers.
- Develop and deploy the custom camera application script that handles live viewfinder preview rendering on the SPI display, processes shutter button interrupts, and saves JPEG captures to the local MicroSD card.
4
Testing & Calibration
- Perform a power-on self-test by connecting a USB-C charger to verify that the IP5306 module successfully charges the internal battery and provides stable 5V and 3.3V rails.
- Calibrate the C270 webcam lens focus and adjust software exposure, white balance, and contrast settings via the V4L2 interface for optimal outdoor photography quality.
- Conduct functional verification of the tactile buttons by testing shutter trigger responsiveness and mode navigation through the local display UI, ensuring images save correctly to the MicroSD card.

Design Schemes
Compute Module Carrier Board with Integrated Display ★
Uses a Raspberry Pi Compute Module / Zero 2 W mated to a custom carrier board featuring a power management IC, USB host interface for the stripped Logitech C270 core, SPI display interface, and MicroSD storage.
Trade-offs: Lowest physical footprint and clean modular stack-up, but higher custom carrier PCB development complexity and connector cost.
Key IC selection
main compute and OS host
- Need: Execute embedded Linux, handle USB host stack for UVC webcam, process image pipelines, and drive SPI display at interactive framerates.
- Class: Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 System-on-Module / Single Board Computer
- Shortlist: Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4)
- Pick: Select based on physical form factor constraints, availability of CSI/USB interfaces, and thermal dissipation inside a compact portable enclosure.
battery charger and power path controller
- Need: Manage high-current USB-C charging for a single-cell Li-ion battery while dynamically scaling system rails (5V and 3.3V) under varying load transients.
- Class: I2C-controlled Switch-mode Battery Charger + Buck-Boost Regulator
- Shortlist: TI BQ25896 + TPS63020, MP2654 + TPS63030
- Pick: Select based on input voltage range, quiescent current in standby, and thermal performance during fast charging.
viewfinder display panel driver
- Need: Drive a 2.0 inch IPS TFT panel with high color fidelity and acceptable refresh rate via SPI/RGB interface from the host processor.
- Class: TFT LCD with integrated ST7789 controller driver IC
- Shortlist: 2.0 inch ST7789 IPS module (SPI interface), 2.0 inch ili9341 IPS module
- Pick: Choose ST7789 for better Linux DRM/KMS driver ecosystem support and lack of requirement for a separate GRAM frame buffer.
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | power | high | Redundancy and conflict between multiple power ICs (TI BQ25896, TPS63020, and IP5306) specified in the power architecture can lead to bus contention, uncontrolled boost loops, or excessive quiescent drain. | Consolidate the PMIC architecture to a single primary charger IC coupled with a well-defined buck-boost regulator; remove the redundant IP5306 power bank module circuit. |
| r2 | firmware | high | High USB bandwidth and CPU overhead when streaming uncompressed/MJPEG video from the Logitech C270 UVC camera while simultaneously encoding files and updating the ST7789 SPI display on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W. | Optimize the V4L2 capture pipeline, utilize multi-threading for preview rendering, and offload display updates via hardware SPI DMA to prevent dropped frames. |
| r3 | thermal | med | Enclosing the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W / CM4 alongside charging ICs inside a small, sealed portable plastic camera body will trap heat, leading to thermal throttling during extended video recording. | Include internal thermal pads connecting the SoC to a small internal metal shield/plate acting as a heat spreader, and ensure adequate ventilation clearances in the mechanical CAD. |
Bring-up and Validation Plan
- Power-off inspection and rail resistance checks
- Current-limited first power-up; verify every rail before enabling loads
- Validate interfaces and timing one subsystem at a time
- Run thermal, fault-injection, EMC pre-scan, and endurance tests for the target environment
