1
Procurement & Preparation
- Inventory and inspect the TYPE-C-3.1-16PIN USB-C Power Jack and ESP32-WROOM-32 module for any bent pins or manufacturing defects.
- Prepare the custom PCB for the compact robotic hand by cleaning the surface with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and oxidation.
2
Hardware Assembly & Wiring
- Solder the TYPE-C-3.1-16PIN USB-C Power Jack to the designated power input pads on the custom PCB.
- Mount and solder the ESP32-WROOM-32 module onto the main controller footprint of the custom PCB.
- Establish the Power connection interface by verifying continuity between the USB-C 5V/GND pins and the ESP32-WROOM-32 power input pins.
3
Firmware Setup
- Connect the compact robotic hand to a host computer via a USB-C data cable to establish a serial connection with the ESP32-WROOM-32.
- Configure the development environment (Arduino IDE or ESP-IDF) and compile the wireless control firmware for the ESP32-WROOM-32.
- Flash the compiled firmware binary onto the ESP32-WROOM-32 controller.
4
Testing & Calibration
- Power the compact robotic hand via a 5V USB power source and verify the power LED indicator lights up on the PCB.
- Test the wireless connectivity of the ESP32-WROOM-32 by scanning for its broadcasted Wi-Fi/Bluetooth SSID or pinging its IP address.
- Run system diagnostic routines via the serial interface to confirm proper initialization of the controller and power rails.

Key IC selection
main MCU and wireless controller
- Need: Provide dual-core processing, Wi-Fi/BLE connectivity, and sufficient GPIOs for multi-axis servo PWM generation within a compact footprint.
- Class: Wi-Fi/BLE SoC Module
- Shortlist: Espressif ESP32-WROOM-32, Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM-1
- Pick: Select based on antenna clearance requirements and availability of native USB peripheral support for debugging.
USB-C power input and voltage regulation
- Need: Accept 5V USB-C power input and step down to 3.3V for MCU logic while providing a bypassed high-current rail for servo motors.
- Class: Synchronous Buck Regulator + LDO combination
- Shortlist: TI TPS62840 family, Richtek RT8097 family
- Pick: Choose based on quiescent current, max load current for servo peak transients, and compact SOT-23/WSON packaging.
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | power | high | High transient current draw from multiple servo motors starting simultaneously via USB-C power can cause 3.3V rail brownouts and ESP32 resets. | Isolate servo power rails from the MCU logic supply; add bulk capacitance (>= 470uF) near the servo power header and use a robust LDO/Buck with good transient response. |
| r2 | thermal | med | Compact robotic hand enclosure traps heat generated by continuous servo actuation and ESP32 Wi-Fi transmission, causing local thermal buildup. | Ensure adequate copper pour on the custom PCB for thermal dissipation and include firmware duty-cycle throttling or sleep modes for the Wi-Fi radio. |
