1
Procurement & Preparation
- Source and inspect all Bill of Materials components including MCP1700 LDO, nRF52840-QIAA-R7 MCU, BME280 sensor, 0.96 inch SSD1306 OLED display, Schottky diodes for power OR-ing, a CR2032 coin cell holder, USB-C receptacle, and passive components (capacitors and pull-up resistors).
- Prepare the PCB stencil, solder paste (SAC305), and organize the workbench with a temperature-controlled reflow station and soldering iron.
2
Hardware Assembly & Wiring
- Apply solder paste to the PCB pads using the stencil and mount the Power Management circuit including the USB-C connector, Schottky diodes, MCP1700 3.3V LDO, and CR2032 battery holder.
- Place the Nordic nRF52840-QIAA-R7 microcontroller, decoupling capacitors, Bosch BME280 environmental sensor, and the 0.96-inch SSD1306 OLED display header onto their respective PCB pads.
- Run the PCB assembly through the reflow oven following the standard SAC305 temperature profile, then inspect all joints under magnification for bridging or cold solder joints.
- Connect the shared I2C bus lines (SDA, SCL) and 3V3_SYS power rails from the MCU_BLE module to both the ENV_SENSOR (BME280) and STATUS_DISPLAY (SSD1306 OLED) modules if using off-board wiring or secondary breakout pins.
3
Firmware Setup
- Install the Nordic nRF Connect SDK and toolchain, and set up the firmware project configured for the nRF52840 target containing drivers for the BME280 sensor and SSD1306 OLED display.
- Connect a debugger (such as a J-Link) to the SWD programming header of the nRF52840 and flash the compiled environmental monitor firmware image onto the microcontroller.
- Implement the BLE GATT service to broadcast temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure data concurrently while updating the local SSD1306 OLED screen over I2C.
4
Testing & Calibration
- Connect a USB-C cable to the power input and measure the output of the MCP1700 LDO using a digital multimeter to confirm a stable 3.3V system rail.
- Test the automatic power failover by disconnecting the USB-C cable while a CR2032 backup battery is installed, ensuring the OLED display and nRF52840 remain powered without interruption.
- Verify sensor data accuracy by comparing BME280 temperature, humidity, and pressure readings against a calibrated reference instrument in a controlled environment chamber.
- Perform a final end-to-end Bluetooth Low Energy scan using a smartphone to verify that the device advertises environmental telemetry packets correctly and updates the SSD1306 screen in real-time.

Design Schemes
Balanced BLE Environmental Monitor ★
Default mix of ultra-low-power Nordic BLE SoC, Bosch environmental sensor, and SSD1306 OLED display with USB-C and coin cell backup.
Trade-offs: Good availability, excellent low-power performance; not the cheapest or the highest feature set.
Cost-first BLE Environmental Monitor
Cost-optimized design utilizing an ESP32-C3 RISC-V SoC with integrated wireless, a simplified sensor, and direct USB-C power without display.
Trade-offs: Lower BOM cost; drops the OLED display and coin cell backup, relying entirely on USB-C power and software compensation.
Key IC selection
Main application processor and BLE connectivity
- Need: Low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M4 core with integrated 2.4GHz transceiver supporting Bluetooth 5, sufficient GPIOs for I2C sensors and OLED display.
- Class: System-on-Chip (SoC)
- Shortlist: Nordic nRF52840, Silicon Labs EFR32BG22
- Pick: Select Nordic nRF52840 for mature BLE stack, extensive ecosystem, and native USB support matching the USB-C power interface.
Power path management and 3.3V regulation
- Need: Seamless switchover between USB-C (5V) and CR2032 (3V) coin cell, with ultra-low quiescent current to maximize coin cell standby life.
- Class: Low-Dropout Regulator (LDO) with Schottky diode OR-ing network
- Shortlist: Microchip MCP1700, Texas Instruments TPS7A02
- Pick: Select Microchip MCP1700 for its exceptionally low quiescent current (1.6uA typ) and stable operation with ceramic output capacitors.
Environmental parameter measurement
- Need: High-accuracy, low-power digital sensor capable of measuring temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure simultaneously.
- Class: Digital Environmental Sensor IC

- Pick: Select Bosch BME280 for integrated 3-in-1 measurement capability, small footprint, and low power consumption in a single I2C addressable package.
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | power | high | CR2032 coin cell reverse-charging risk if Schottky diode leakage current is too high when USB-C 5V is active. | Select low-leakage Schottky diodes (e.g., BAT54 series or equivalent with nano-amp leakage ratings) for the OR-ing circuit. |
| r2 | thermal | med | Self-heating from the local PCB components or continuous OLED operation can cause the BME280 temperature sensor to read artificially high. | Place the BME280 on a thermal relief cutout area of the PCB away from the OLED display driver and power LDO; implement firmware thermal compensation if necessary. |
| r3 | supply | med | OLED display (SSD1306) current consumption during full white screen can cause voltage drop on the coin cell, leading to system brownout. | Limit OLED duty cycle in firmware, implement power gating if running on coin cell, and ensure adequate bulk decoupling capacitance on the 3.3V rail. |
