Key IC selection

main MCU

• Need: Execute user applications, manage peripheral I/O for keyboard/display, and provide robust Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity in a portable form factor.
• Class: Wi-Fi/Bluetooth SoC Module
• Shortlist: Espressif ESP32-WROOM-32 series, Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM series
• Pick: Select based on required GPIO count, flash size (e.g., 8MB or 16MB), and certification status for wireless compliance.

power path and USB-C controller

• Need: Accept standard USB-C power, handle 5V/9V/12V PD negotiation, and provide safe charging and regulation for the system rails.
• Class: USB Type-C Port Controller & Buck-Boost Power Management IC
• Shortlist: Texas Instruments TPS6598x + BQ25713, Richtek RT1715 + MP2731
• Pick: Select based on input voltage range, quiescent current, and integrated battery charging support for a portable clamshell device.

Risk register

ID	Area	Severity	Detail	Mitigation
r1	rf	high	The ESP32-WROOM-32 module antenna may suffer from severe detuning or signal attenuation due to the metallic or carbon-fiber enclosure typically used in cyberdeck designs.	Ensure proper antenna clearance, keep metallic structural elements away from the module's Keep-Out zone, or route out to an external/board-edge antenna if enclosed in metal.
r2	thermal	med	Clamshell folding layout limits airflow, potentially causing heat buildup from the MCU and power management IC during intensive compiling or wireless transmission.	Add thermal pads connecting high-dissipation components to the internal chassis or keyboard backing plate to act as a heat spreader.
r3	power	med	USB-C power dropouts or inadequate negotiation with high-wattage adapters can cause unexpected resets during heavy Wi-Fi transmission bursts.	Implement robust bulk capacitance on the 5V rail and ensure proper CC line pull-down resistors for stable PD handshake.

Key Components
