Key IC selection

main wireless/system controller

• Need: Provide Wi-Fi/BLE connectivity and auxiliary system control, though an external USB bridge is still mandatory for 5 Gbps data transfer
• Class: Wi-Fi/BLE Microcontroller Module
• Shortlist: ESP32-WROOM-32, ESP32-S3-WROOM-1
• Pick: Select based on peripheral availability, GPIO count, and cost

power input and regulation

• Need: Accept external DC input and step down to generate clean 5V and 12V rails for HDD and board electronics
• Class: DC-DC Buck Regulator & LDO topology
• Shortlist: TPS54331, MP2307
• Pick: Select based on 12V input voltage tolerance, 3A+ output current capability, and thermal performance in a plastic enclosure

Risk register

ID	Area	Severity	Detail	Mitigation
r1	firmware	high	ESP32-WROOM-32 does not support USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) high-speed data bridging natively, making the system architecture incomplete without an auxiliary USB-to-SATA bridge IC.	Add a dedicated USB 3.2 to SATA bridge IC (e.g., ASMedia ASM225CL or JMS578) between the USB-C port and the HDD connector.
r2	thermal	med	3.5-inch mechanical hard drives generate significant heat, and low-cost consumer plastic enclosures lack inherent thermal conductivity for passive cooling.	Include internal airflow vents, thermal pads contacting internal shielding, or a small DC fan if enclosure dimensions permit.
r3	power	high	3.5-inch HDDs draw high peak currents (up to 2A+ on 12V) during spin-up, which can cause voltage sag if the external AC/DC adapter or internal regulators are undersized.	Specify an AC/DC adapter with adequate 12V peak current headroom and place bulk low-ESR electrolytic capacitors near the power input and SATA power pins.

Bring-up and Validation Plan

1. Power-off inspection and rail resistance checks
2. Current-limited first power-up; verify every rail before enabling loads
3. Validate interfaces and timing one subsystem at a time
4. Run thermal, fault-injection, EMC pre-scan, and endurance tests for the target environment

Key Components

2/2 modules matched to real parts. See the BOM tab for the full component table.

USB-C Power Jack (UJ31-CH-314-SMT-TR)

The candidate's MPN (UJ31-CH-314-SMT-TR) matches the primary MPN and the manufacturer (Cui Devices) aligns with the pref

ESP32-WROOM-32 (ESP32-WROOM-32)

The candidate MPN 'ESP32-WROOM-32' is an exact match to the primary MPN and the manufacturer matches Espressif Systems.

Build Summary

• Difficulty: Intermediate
• Estimated time: 3-4 hours
• Tools required: Anti-static tweezers, Digital Multimeter, Magnifying glass, Stencil printer/frame, Squeegee blade, Isopropyl alcohol (99%)

See the Build tab for the full step-by-step assembly guide.

Evidence and Limitations

• Confirm part parameters, certifications, and compatibility against current manufacturer documents.
• Treat industry compliance without test or certificate evidence as a compliance gap, not an approval.
• See Reference Images for visual artifacts and Build Guide for detailed assembly and bring-up steps.
