Key IC selection
main controller and wireless transceiver
- Need: Execute measurement processing and maintain simultaneous BLE and Wi-Fi links for real-time app streaming.
- Class: Wi-Fi + BLE Combo MCU module with integrated flash and ADC peripherals
- Shortlist: Espressif ESP32-WROOM-32 series, Realtek Ameba series
- Pick: Select based on module certification (FCC/CE), flash size (4MB/8MB), and stock availability in the supply chain.
USB-C interface and power management
- Need: Accept standard 5V USB power, regulate system rails, and safely charge a single-cell Li-ion battery for a pocket-sized form factor.
- Class: USB Type-C port controller with linear/switching battery charger and step-down DC-DC regulator
- Shortlist: TI BQ25150 / TPS63030 combination, Richtek RT9471 + MP2145
- Pick: Select based on ultra-low quiescent current, quiescent operating profile during battery-only DMM operation, and PCB footprint area.
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | emi | high | High-frequency switching noise from the ESP32 RF transceiver and internal DC-DC converters can couple into the high-impedance analog front-end (AFE) of the DMM, causing measurement jitter and low-voltage inaccuracies. | Implement strict physical separation and ground plane partitioning between the wireless/digital section and the measurement AFE, using localized shielding cans if necessary. |
| r2 | thermal | med | The pocket-sized probe attachment form factor severely limits passive heat dissipation, which can cause internal temperature drift affecting internal voltage reference accuracy. | Use a low-drift external voltage reference with a guaranteed temperature coefficient and keep continuous Wi-Fi transmission duty cycles optimized to reduce self-heating. |
