Key IC selection
main MCU
- Need: Execute measurement math, control analog front-end range switching, and drive local display.
- Class: Wi-Fi/BLE enabled 32-bit Microcontroller with integrated SAR ADC
- Shortlist: ESP32-WROOM-32, ESP32-S3-WROOM-1
- Pick: Select ESP32-WROOM-32 based on availability, dual-core processing, and sufficient GPIO/ADC peripherals for basic DMM functions.
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | emi | high | ESP32 RF transmitter (Wi-Fi/BLE) noise coupling into the sensitive high-impedance analog measurement front-end, causing unstable DC voltage and resistance readings. | Implement strict PCB layout separation between analog measurement traces and RF/digital sections, use grounded guard rings, and add RC filtering on ADC inputs. |
| r2 | firmware | med | ESP32 integrated ADC has known non-linearity and offset errors, which will directly degrade the measurement accuracy of the multimeter. | Implement multi-point software calibration routines in firmware stored in NVS, and consider adding an external low-drift precision ADC if higher than 10-bit effective resolution is required. |
