Compact Portable Cyberdeck

A mid-priced, highly integrated cyberdeck built for gaming and emergency use, featuring a single-board computer, mechanical keys, and USB-PD battery power inside a compact 165x93x45mm 3D-printed enclosure.

Design Overview

System Architecture

Power Topology: USB-C PD input feeds BQ25896 charger for Multi-Cell Li-ion battery pack; TPS61038 boost converter steps up battery voltage to 5V main rail, while local LDOs provide 3.3V for logic, MCU, and RF modules.

Module List

Design Schemes

Raspberry Pi 5 High-Performance Cyberdeck ★

Utilizes Raspberry Pi 5 SBC with dedicated USB-PD power management, TCA8418 mechanical keyboard controller, and high-res display.

Trade-offs: Higher performance and robust Linux ecosystem at the cost of strict thermal management and tighter component layout constraints.

Raspberry Pi 4 Optimized Cyberdeck

Utilizes Raspberry Pi 4 SBC with IP2312 charging and integrated USB-PD controller for a cost-optimized build.

Trade-offs: Lower component cost and reduced thermal output, but slightly lower gaming benchmark performance compared to Pi 5.

Key IC selection

main compute host

• Need: High-performance quad-core ARM processor with integrated GPU, PCIe, and rich peripheral support for Linux gaming
• Class: Single Board Computer / Application Processor Module
• Shortlist: Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 / CM5, Raspberry Pi 5 SBC
• Pick: Select based on form factor constraints, thermal design power, and standard peripheral connector availability for compact cyberdeck integration

charger and power path manager

• Need: I2C controlled switch-mode battery charger with USB-PD input support and dynamic power path management
• Class: Switch-Mode Battery Charger IC
• Shortlist: TI BQ25896, Analog Devices MAX77829
• Pick: Choose BQ25896 for its robust high-input-voltage surge protection, high charging current capability, and proven ecosystem support

sub-GHz LoRa transceiver

• Need: Long-range, low-power wireless communication transceiver supporting ISM bands for emergency messaging
• Class: Sub-GHz RF Transceiver IC / Module
• Shortlist: Semtech SX1262, Silicon Labs Si4463
• Pick: Select SX1262 for superior link budget, low receive current, and extensive community library support for off-grid mesh protocols
