System Architecture
Power Topology: Solar panels collect energy under direct sunlight, regulated via an MPPT charge controller into a USB Power Bank buffer. The power bank outputs 5V to distribute regulated power rails to the Raspberry Pi 1, Seeeduino motor controller, and onboard DC-DC step-down converters for 3.3V logic modules (RPi Pico, Trinket M0, RTK GPS, LoRa, and ADXL345).

Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | power | high | Using an unbuffered USB Power Bank alongside a solar MPPT charger can cause brownouts during high motor-torque transients on the 5V rail. | Incorporate bulk electrolytic capacitance and a dedicated power path management IC (e.g., BQ25895) to isolate transient loads from compute rails. |
| r2 | thermal | med | Enclosure heating under direct outdoor solar radiation combined with linear or poorly optimized switching regulators can lead to thermal throttling. | Use high-efficiency synchronous buck converters for all voltage rails and provide thermal conduction paths to the 3D-printed chassis or external heatsink. |
| r3 | emi | high | Close physical proximity between the high-frequency DC motor PWM lines, the SX1262 LoRa antenna, and the ZED-F9P GPS antenna will cause RF desense and positioning degradation. | Apply strict PCB layout separation, use shielded twisted-pair cables for motors, place RF antennas away from motor drivers, and add common-mode chokes on power lines. |
Bring-up and Validation Plan
- Power-off inspection and rail resistance checks
- Current-limited first power-up; verify every rail before enabling loads
- Validate interfaces and timing one subsystem at a time
