Oscillators Component Intelligence

Select the right clock source for your timing budget and environmental constraints.

What are Oscillators components?

Oscillators provide the active clock signal for digital systems. Unlike passive crystals, they integrate the drive circuit, simplifying PCB layout. Choose based on frequency stability (ppm), jitter requirements, supply voltage, and environmental temperature range.

How to Choose Oscillators Components

Selecting an oscillator requires balancing timing precision against power consumption and physical footprint.

  1. Stability (ppm)

Determine if you need standard XO (50-100ppm) or high-precision TCXO/OCXO for synchronization.

  2. Jitter & Phase Noise

Critical for high-speed SerDes and RF; ensure the integrated jitter meets your SoC's clock input requirements.

  3. Output Logic

Match the output type (LVCMOS, LVPECL, LVDS, HCSL) to the receiver's input stage.

  4. Supply Voltage

Verify the oscillator voltage matches your rail (e.g., 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V) to avoid level shifting.

  5. Package Size

    Standard industry footprints (e.g., 2016, 2520, 3225) are preferred for multi-sourcing.

Frequently Asked Questions

An XO (Crystal Oscillator) is a standard clock generator. A TCXO (Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator) includes internal circuitry to adjust for frequency drift caused by temperature changes, providing much higher stability.
