Design Schemes
OTS BLE SoC Module with I2C Sensors and OLED ★
This scheme utilizes an off-the-shelf BLE SoC module combined with an LDO power regulator, I2C environmental and motion sensors, and an I2C OLED display for rapid prototyping.
Trade-offs: Optimized for speed and simplicity using standard breakout/module components, slightly larger than fully custom embedded designs but eliminates high-frequency RF layout risks.
Key IC selection
Main compute and BLE mesh wireless engine
- Need: Provide low-cost RISC-V processing with integrated 2.4GHz Wi-Fi/BLE 5 for mesh networking and sufficient GPIOs for multiple I2C peripherals.
- Class: Integrated RF MCU Module (RISC-V + BLE 5)
- Shortlist: Espressif ESP32-C3-MINI-1, Nordic nRF52840 Module
- Pick: Select based on module certification footprint, flash size (4MB), antenna performance, and SDK maturity for BLE Mesh.
Main 5V to 3.3V system power conversion
- Need: Step down fixed 5V USB input to a stable, low-noise 3.3V rail supporting at least 500mA for transient RF transmit peaks.
- Class: Low Dropout Linear Regulator (LDO), >=600mA
- Shortlist: Diodes Inc. AP2112K-3.3TRG1, Advanced Monolithic Systems AMS117-3.3 (too bulky), Microchip MCP1825S
- Pick: Select based on quiescent current, PSRR for RF noise rejection, thermal dissipation in SOT-23-5, and BOM cost.
Indoor air quality and environmental sensing
- Need: Measure accurate temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and VOC gases in a compact footprint suitable for smart office desks.
- Class: 4-in-1 Environmental Sensor (Gas/Pressure/Temp/Humidity)
- Shortlist: Bosch BME680, Sensirion SEN54 (too large), Bosch BME280 (lacks gas sensor)
- Pick: Select based on IAQ algorithm support, power consumption during heater phases, and package dimensions.
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | thermal | med | The BME680 internal gas sensor heater dissipates thermal energy that can bias the adjacent temperature and relative humidity measurements inside a small enclosure. | Apply firmware compensation algorithms using BME680 library heater profiles and separate the sensor physically from high-heat components like the LDO and ESP32 module. |
| r2 | emi | med | Co-locating the ESP32-C3 2.4GHz antenna close to the I2C bus lines driving the OLED and sensors may cause RF desense or noise coupling onto sensor lines. | Route I2C traces away from the ESP32 RF keep-out zone, add series damping resistors (22-33 ohms) on I2C clock/data lines, and ensure proper ground plane stitching. |
| r3 | supply | high | Global supply chain volatility for environmental sensors (like Bosch BME680) and specific LDOs can lead to sudden stockouts and production halts. | Design PCB footprint or alternate resistor bridging to allow drop-in secondary source alternatives (e.g., separating temperature/humidity and VOC paths if necessary, or pre-qualifying pin-compatible LDOs). |
Bring-up and Validation Plan
- Power-off inspection and rail resistance checks
- Current-limited first power-up; verify every rail before enabling loads
- Validate interfaces and timing one subsystem at a time
- Run thermal, fault-injection, EMC pre-scan, and endurance tests for the target environment
