Key IC selection
main MCU
- Need: Execute retro game logic, handle SPI/I2C display updates, and manage simultaneous Bluetooth audio and HID gamepad connections.
- Class: Wi-Fi/Bluetooth enabled 32-bit dual-core microcontroller
- Shortlist: Espressif ESP32-WROOM-32 series, Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM series
- Pick: Select exact module variant based on integrated flash size (e.g., 4MB or 8MB) needed for game assets and OTA firmware updates.
USB-C Power Jack and Regulation
- Need: Accept 5V USB power, provide basic ESD protection, and step down to 3.3V for the ESP32 and OLED display.
- Class: USB Type-C Receptacle + LDO/Buck Voltage Regulator
- Shortlist: Standard Type-C 16pin/24pin connector + AMS1117-3.3, Type-C connector + ME6211 low-dropout regulator
- Pick: Select based on quiescent current and maximum load current requirements for the display backlight and RF transmission peaks.
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | firmware | high | ESP32 running intense raycasting loops for DOOM while maintaining concurrent Bluetooth BLE/Classic connections for audio and gamepads may experience audio stuttering or packet drops due to Wi-Fi/BT and CPU core contention. | Offload graphics rendering strictly to one core while dedicating the second core to FreeRTOS tasks handling network/Bluetooth stacks and peripheral polling. |
| r2 | emi | med | Miniature arcade cabinet implies tight physical proximity between the ESP32 onboard PCB antenna, high-speed OLED SPI lines, and USB power traces, potentially causing RF desense or wireless packet loss. | Ensure adequate keep-out zone around the ESP32-WROOM-32 antenna edge, route SPI traces away from the RF section, and place decoupling capacitors close to the module power pins. |
