Build guide
Procurement & Preparation
- Sort and inventory all semiconductor components including the 1N4007 protection diode, 6N137 optocoupler, THAT300P14-U matched transistor array, LM3046 transistor array, and LM13700 OTA ICs against the BOM.
- Inspect the Eurorack bus distribution board, MIDI interface PCB, discrete VCO PCB, transistor ladder filter PCB, and OTA VCA PCB for manufacturing defects, trace breaks, or solder mask errors.
Hardware Assembly & Wiring
- Populate and solder the Eurorack Bus Distribution Board, installing the 1N4007 reverse-polarity protection diode, decoupling capacitors, and standard 16-pin Eurorack power headers.
- Assemble the Passive MIDI Jack circuit, mounting the DIN socket, current-limiting resistors, and soldering the N137 optocoupler and transistor buffer stage for gate/trigger conversion.
- Build the Transistor Core Discrete VCO module, mounting the THAT300P14-U matched transistor array, precision resistors, and timing capacitors onto the analog core board.
- Construct the Moog-Style Transistor Ladder Filter module by installing the LM3046 matched transistor array, operational amplifiers, and cutoff/resonance potentiometers.
- Assemble the LM13700 OTA-Based Voltage Controlled Amplifier module, installing the LM13700 dual OTA, audio jacks, and gain-cell supporting passives.
- Connect power wiring and inter-module audio paths: link POWER to PASSIVE_MIDI (+5V, GND), POWER to DISCRETE_VCO, LADDER_VCF, and OTA_VCA (+/-12V, GND). Patch DISCRETE_VCO audio out to LADDER_VCF (+/-5V AUDIO_OUT), and LADDER_VCF audio out to OTA_VCA (+/-5V AUDIO_OUT).
Firmware Setup
- Configure internal microcontroller interfaces or check hardware logic states on the MIDI buffer/gate conversion circuit to ensure proper trigger response timing.
Testing & Calibration
- Perform a smoke test and power rail check using a digital multimeter on the bus board and module power headers to verify stable +12V, -12V, and +5V supplies without current draw spikes.
- Calibrate the Transistor Core Discrete VCO 1V/Octave tracking response using a precision CV source and frequency counter across the audio range.
- Test the signal chain path from DISCRETE_VCO through LADDER_VCF and OTA_VCA, verifying filter cutoff modulation and clean VCA linear amplitude control using an oscilloscope and audio monitor.

Design Schemes
Entry-Level Microcontroller & Simple Analog Synth Scheme
Utilizes a low-cost entry-level MCU with optoisolated MIDI input to generate Gate and pitch CV, paired with basic analog building blocks (VCO, VCF, VCA).
Trade-offs: Lowest BOM cost and reliable MIDI translation, relying on digital pitch quantization rather than pure discrete analog pitch generation.
Pure Discrete Analog & Passive MIDI Scheme ★
Features passive MIDI connection with optocoupler, traditional transistor/diode discrete VCO core, Moog-style ladder filter, and OTA VCA.
Trade-offs: Offers authentic vintage analog synthesis sound and zero digital latency, but higher component tuning complexity and lacks microcontrollers.
Key IC selection
reverse polarity and overcurrent protection
- Need: Protect sensitive analog synth circuitry from inverted Eurorack ribbon cable insertion (-12V on +12V rails)
- Class: P-Channel MOSFET reverse polarity protection circuit with Schottky diode clamp
- Shortlist: AO3401A, NDP6020P
- Pick: Select low Vgs(th) P-MOSFET with low Rds(on) to minimize voltage drop on high-current supply rails.
high-speed optical isolation
- Need: Provide galvanic isolation for MIDI current loop and achieve fast rise/fall times for accurate trigger extraction
- Class: High-speed optocoupler with integrated logic gate output
- Shortlist: 6N137, SFH6135
- Pick: Select 6N137 for industry-standard availability, 10MB પ્રતિs speed, and open-collector TTL compatible output.
voltage-controlled amplifier core
- Need: Provide dual operational transconductance blocks with linearizing diodes for low-distortion audio VCA design
- Class: Dual OTA with internal buffers
- Shortlist: LM13700, NE5517
- Pick: Select LM13700 for widespread audio-grade availability, integrated buffers, and linearizing diodes.
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | thermal | med | Discrete transistor ladder filter (LADDER_VCF) and OTA core are sensitive to ambient temperature drift, causing VCO/VCF pitch and cutoff instability. | Ensure thermal coupling (thermal grease or shrink wrap) between matched transistor pairs in DISCRETE_VCO and LADDER_VCF. |
| r2 | power | high | Eurorack power supplies vary significantly in current capability and noise floor (+12V/-12V/+5V rail cross-talk). | Include local power rail decoupling capacitors (10uF tantalum + 0.1uF ceramic) on every active module block, alongside ferrite beads on power entry. |
| r3 | emi | med | High-frequency digital switching noise from external MIDI logic or bus interference coupling into high-gain OTA and discrete transistor audio paths. | Separate digital ground domains for PASSIVE_MIDI from analog ground planes of VCO, VCF, and VCA, connecting them at a single star-ground point. |
