1
Procurement & Preparation
- Gather components and inspect the TYPEC-304J-BCP16 USB-C Power Jack and ESP32-WROOM-32 microcontroller module for any physical defects or bent pins.
2
Hardware Assembly & Wiring
- Solder the 5V and GND power signals from the TYPEC-304J-BCP16 USB-C Power Jack to the designated 5V and GND input pins on the ESP32-WROOM-32 module.
3
Firmware Setup
- Connect the mini cyberdeck to a development PC via a USB-C cable and flash the offline maps, Wikipedia database, and primary firmware onto the ESP32-WROOM-32.
4
Testing & Calibration
- Power the mini cyberdeck using the USB-C Power Jack and measure the voltage rails with a multimeter to verify steady 5V delivery, followed by booting the system to test offline maps and USB storage access.

Key IC selection
main MCU
- Need: Dual-core Wi-Fi/BT SoC with sufficient GPIOs for display, external storage, and USB interfacing, operating under low power constraints
- Class: 32-bit Microcontroller with integrated wireless and rich peripheral set
- Shortlist: Espressif ESP32-WROOM-32, Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM-1
- Pick: Select based on native USB OTG support and Flash/PSRAM density requirements for offline database caching
power path
- Need: Regulate USB-C 5V input to stable 3.3V rail for MCU and peripherals, with optional battery charging for emergency use
- Class: USB Type-C port controller with integrated buck regulator and battery charger
- Shortlist: TI TPS63020 + BQ25120, Richtek RT9471
- Pick: Select based on quiescent current and whether internal battery backup is mandatory for the emergency preparedness feature
Risk register
| ID | Area | Severity | Detail | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r1 | firmware | high | ESP32-WROOM-32 has limited internal flash (typically 4MB or 8MB), which is grossly inadequate for storing offline Wikipedia dumps and offline map tiles. | Add an external SPI NAND Flash or MicroSD card interface module for mass data storage and update the MCU shortlist to a variant with Octal SPI PSRAM/Flash support. |
| r2 | power | med | Classic ESP32 lacks native USB Full-Speed USB-OTG hardware, making direct high-speed external USB storage connectivity complex or reliant on slow bit-banging/SPI-to-USB bridges. | Transition the MCU module selection from ESP32 to ESP32-S3, which features native USB OTG support for easier external USB thumb drive integration. |
